‘Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant’ Mark 10:43 NIV

It’s a strange thing: Jesus opened the doors of Heaven wide for His disciples, showed them the free wonders and mysteries of God, the wealth of really knowing Him.

They seemed to get it, too. But then they got a taste for glory, and not in a good way.

In Mark 10, James and John started to like the whole getting-honored-by-others-business and put in a request for a couple of shiny thrones—you know, the kind they would put beside Jesus: one on the left, one on the right

Nope”, said Jesus, “not so among you.” It might be the way of the world to climb an increasingly golden ladder, but with Jesus’ people,

the glittering and the powerful only comes through the cross.

What’s needed at the Cross is to finally treat other people as worth more attention than you. Strange, but that’s how it is.

Want to do something amazing in Jesus’ eyes? Give the old dear from church a lift with moving her old ref.

Want to bring miracles and wonders into your circle of influence? Take time to chat with the kid everyone thinks is weird.

The greatest leader ever didn’t come to earth to live at One Ayala or win the sweepstakes. He lived out Galatians 5:13 (NLT):

‘Don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature [looking inward to you and you only]. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.’

What now?

This isn’t just Jesus ‘teaching us a lesson’ before we get our crowns. This is the way the world works best. God is showing us what works in His kingdom and for the rest of the world.. Look out for those who could do with the kindness of another person’s attention today.
