Word 4U Today

THE WORD, FOR YOU, TODAY (3) – BUT I DON’T WANT TO READ

THE WORD, FOR YOU, TODAY (3) – BUT I DON’T WANT TO READ

Let’s face it. We don’t always feel like reading the Bible. It’s all well and good to be told to “crave pure spiritual milk” like that, but craving isn’t a choice, is it?

Not exactly. But you CAN make the choice to practice yourself towards a place where it’ll happen naturally. 1 Peter 2:1 mentions the need to get rid of “all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind” (NIV) before craving spiritual milk.

It makes it seem like Peter thinks that it’s not possible to get to a place of true, honest desperation for Godly growth while having a heart full of hateful emotion. Hmm, what a curious thing…

Also, 1 Peter 2:3 explains that craving good God-things comes from having “tasted that the Lord is good” (NIV). You have to ‘taste’ your Bible (read it a bit) and notice the positive effects, before you can start to crave chowing down on it regularly.

The first step towards that is to commit to a routine, to make the decision to read a bit of the Bible every day.

The second step is to actually do it even if you really don’t want to (Especially when you really don’t want to). And if you miss a day or two (or a week), pick it up again anyway from that day. Keep going. Then, maybe after a while, you’ll find that it becomes a part of your day that you look forward to.

WHAT NOW?

Get started then! Plan exactly when you’ll spend that time today, and then actually do it. Or if you’re already managing it, how can you encourage a friend to help them get into a Bible-reading routine?

Verse of the Day:

‘Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that…you may grow…’ 1 Peter 2:2 NIV
