‘The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children’ Romans 8:16 NIV

Adopting kids means paperwork, meetings, social worker visits, added expenses – all sorts of complications, not to mention the possibility of heartbreak along the way.

But the parent never gives up, because the joy of being a parent outweighs the frustrations of the process.

When you lived your life separate from God (whether it was for years, or for those few moments when you turned your back on Him), it brought Him much pain.

But He signed your adoption papers using Christ’s blood.

Today’s verse in the NLT Bible says: “His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.”

The Message version says: “God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are.

We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children.”

Why did He even bother?

Because “of the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2).

That is—wait for it—-

Your baby-steps in awkward, clumsy prayer were priceless for God.

The first time you made that decision to try to put God over your own desires was a beautiful moment.

With God’s adoption, you really are in the family home. (Yes, there may be bickering with your other brothers and sisters, but you’re a family that look out for each other.)

God adopts you because He wants to love and raise you in the family.

Do you have that assurance of “God’s Spirit joined with yours”? It’s not a feeling you can just make up, but if the answer is no, it might be worth asking: Why not?
