‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread’ Matthew 4:3 NLT

God will allow you to face temptation.

Why? Because: the evil you’re being tempted by exists, and in order to take part in this world as a child of God, you need to have encountered it and chosen God over it.

It’s a process that makes you more faithful to God, stronger to resist distractions, and more effective at pointing other people to Him in similar situations later down the line.

In the spiritual war that you’ve been born-again into, you need to know your enemy, and with Jesus’ help, to practice choosing God over him.

And yes: Jesus went through it.

That’s not the empty Sunday-School answer it may sound like. ‘…Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil’ (v. 1).

Jesus had gone to spend serious, dedicated time fasting and focusing on God (how’s THAT for a What Now?!…).

So when Satan offers Him a “helpful” easy fix that would turn His back on the fasting-for-Father-focus plan, you can see the attraction.

No! The Scriptures say, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”’ (v. 4).

When you face-off temptation, you trade it in for something better. The fact that you face it means you come out with riches of goodness – from the mouth of God – you can’t get that anywhere else.

 What now?

Tired of having to face the world’s temptations all day long? Today, make conscious efforts to spot when you’re tempted to stray from God. Refuse them, and look hard at what you’re improving by staying firm.
