‘The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.’ Proverbs 14:15 NIV

A wise person takes careful action, thinks twice about what they do before they do it, and makes certain his steps.

A wise person won’t jump blind into any situation or crash like a puppet on a string, arms flailing.

But doesn’t this sound like a recipe for a seriously boring life?

The wise listen out for God’s sure words, instead of following every whim of the world.

Is this for or against God’s ways?

Jesus always talked about motivations, the heart of the matter, not just the action.

For those who listen to God’s word, it’s not just about the consequences of their actions, but whether the whole action itself might be stained with sin, from start to finish, or blessed with the breath of God.

Sometimes living day-to-day in God’s ways is a matter of that practiced instinct mixed with learned knowledge of the way God is and the way He works (a handy place to look for this is the Bible…)

And sometimes God talks straight to you.

This happened to Joshua when he had to lead Israel across a river to the Promised Land.

God had promised that when the feet of the priests carrying the ark stepped into the river, it would roll back.

For sure, God’s word went directly against the rules of nature. But to reach his destiny Joshua had to step into the water.

Faith dared where reason faltered.

This wasn’t about jumping blindly – it was about a sure, God-spoken adventure.

God parts waters on many occasions in the Bible (Exodus 14, Joshua 3 and Matthew 14 are a few). Chances are, there’s something that you need God to move in your own life. Take the time to really study God’s power to move it, and His character to move it, in these verses.
