Stephen and the Seven (2)

Stephen and the Seven (2)

As we saw yesterday, the seven men chosen to serve in Acts 6:1-6 were not picked on a whim. Their job was far too important to turn just anyone loose on it. So we see three things that the apostles were looking for; three things that they thought it was impossible to do this important job without: a good reputation, and being full of both the Holy Spirit and wisdom.

Why’s it so important to be full of the Holy Spirit as a leader in the church?

Let’s think about why Jesus promised the Spirit in the first place… In John 14:26, Jesus said,

‘But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you’ (ESV).

Jesus talks about the Spirit as a Helper, sent with a purpose: to teach his followers and to remind them of everything Jesus taught.

In order to go about Jesus’ business, these seven men needed all the love, compassion and grace of Jesus himself.

Hence, the reason  they needed to be full of the Holy Spirit. The same is true of anyone who would serve in Jesus’ name. The poor, don’t need us; they need Jesus. We don’t have the power to reconcile fragmented communities; only Jesus does.

What Now?

Start to think of a mission activity you are involved with (street outreach? Bible study? Youth group? Sunday school teacher?) in this light: Jesus hasn’t sent you alone; he’s empowered you by his Spirit.

‘Choose…men…full…of the Spirit.’  Acts 6:3 NIV
