Word 4U Today

What is the “shadow of the Almighty”? Isn’t it a bit of a gloomy metaphor?

When typhoon season comes to the Philippines, don’t you just wish that summer were just around the corner?

But if you’d been living in the blistering heat of a desert for the last forty years or so – which is exactly what God’s people had been doing for a fair chunk of the Old Testament – then that shadow is something a little more appealing.

So the Israelites, as you can imagine, liked a good shadow or two.

It meant shelter, comfort, and lots of other life-saving things in a very hot climate.

What does it mean for us?

We know that God’s personality isn’t all-guns-blazing, He’s also our place of safety.

We can read ‘shadow’ as ‘safety’.

In the blistering heat of life’s battles, temptations, and worries,

God is our life-saving shadow we can always come back to.

Yes, we have to go on the offensive sometimes, and withstand the attacks of Satan, and fight back with scripture.

But, in reality, as humans, we aren’t set up to feel like world-beaters all the time. We need to rest in God.

What now?

Wherever you go today, where you can, try this: walk in the shadow of the person next to you. (Just try not to seem stalker-ish!) Think: how close do you have to stay to them to be able to manage it? And do you have to change the rhythm you walk in to stay there? What does this tell you about ‘being in God’s shadow’? Go on. Dare you to.

Verse of the Day:

‘He… shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.’ Psalm 91:1 NKJV
