Remembering

Remembering

Many teenagers have perfected a silent groan and sarcastic roll of the eyes the moment they ever hear an adult say ‘I remember when…’. In their minds the past is well … past! It’s old news, it’s out of date, it’s boring. What’s the point in looking back when we should be looking at forward! Maybe smart phones, game consoles and iPods ALWAYS keep upgrading as time goes on; but do we? Often our walk with God isn’t what it used to be, sometimes we need to look back and remember.

In the book of Revelation, Jesus has a message for a bunch of Christians in a city called Ephesus, but is He speaking to all of us? ‘Remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.’ Go back in your mind to your first days as a Christian.

Do you remember when
a) you talked about Jesus and your heart would be on fire
b) prayer was exciting and you felt empowered as you spent time with Him
c) the Bible was filled with mind blowing insights and ideas you’d never seen before
d) you were desperate for people to find out about how amazing God was?

What happened?

Do you feel like one of the Christians Jesus was speaking to?

Distance from God is a frightening thing because you don’t even know it’s happening! We need to get back into step with Him. When we try to fit God in instead of putting Him first, we are going to lose touch. This week what could you start doing again that ‘you did at first’?

‘Remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.’ Revelation 2:5 NAS
