‘You are the salt of the earth…’ Matthew 5:13 NIV

Positivity isn’t always funny. Not much in the world of entertainment comedy gets laughs from being relentlessly cheerful.

Some humor tends to be sarcastic, with negativity breeding negativity.

But sarcasm is easy – if you want to be cynical, our fallen world is your oyster.

Being grounded and cheerful isn’t. But it’s definitely worth it.

What’s your attitude to life? Do your conversations and jokes build people up or feed on moaning? Are negative people really the sort you want to be around?

Think: just how good is it to be around that rare person when, upon leaving them, you just feel better about life? You know the sort we mean, right? They can leave you walking away feeling just the same way they feel about life: positively. It’s kinda catchy.

Jesus said, ‘You are the light of the world’ (Matthew 5:14 NIV). That means you should be different. Has it occurred to you that that positive person you like to be around could be you? Yeah, your jokes may be less sarcastic, but you’ll probably find that people like you.

But seriously, being refreshingly different is always good – people welcome it. There’s so much more to life than our bitter, wise-cracking culture has told us – but only when it starts and ends in Jesus.

What now?

Is the TV/internet stuff you’re watching doing you any good? Think about it – if you’re left feeling cynical and weary maybe you should mix it up a bit—or avoid watching it altogether.
