Word 4U Today

Our final day exploring the parable of the prodigal (Luke 15) is all about the mud, and what happens when we make wrong habits, and how to deal with them when we come to our senses.

Jesus was being provocative when he placed his lead character in a pig pen. To the Jewish ears of His day, pigs were unclean animals and living with them was unthinkable (it probably still isn’t…) But Jesus’ prodigal son finds himself face down in the pig pen…in all their mud and filth. He probably chose this story device to dramatically illustrate the boy being as far from home as possible.

Sometimes, Christians choose the pig-pen. Tangkal. Babuyan. In fact, have you ever found yourself choosing it time and time again?

That old habit of going ‘too far’ with your boy/girl-friend/ bad language/ pornography/yada yada yada. The short term pleasure won’t ever match up to ‘life to the full’ (John 10:10). Ever.

In the story, the son remembers what he had and comes to his senses. He heads home. What about you? False friends, empty achievements, another-morning-after not doing it for you any more? That’s because they’re what the story calls ‘mud’. Pick yourself up and head home. God has a fresh start hanging on the laundry line for you.

What Now?

Have you been burning the bacon at both ends? Perhaps it’s time to cut some ties. If you can’t honestly live the Christian life when you are with certain people – maybe you need to cut them out of your life. Or maybe a habit or behaviour pattern stops you from getting all God has for you. If so, consider getting help and support from someone trustworthy.

Verse of the Day:

‘When he finally came to his senses…’ Luke 15:17 NLT
