“GRACE: TO BE LET INTO A PLACE YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE” Tim Keller

“GRACE: TO BE LET INTO A PLACE YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE” Tim Keller

In the Old Testament, God’s people had a High Priest every generation, set apart (“anointed with holy oil” Numbers 35:25) to represent God to them, and represent them to their God.

When he died, it also represented (Jesus) dying. God allowed that death to effectively remove sin, to ‘reset’ His people’s relationship with Him.

This was particularly useful if you’d accidentally killed someone. Legally, the victim’s family could kill you in return. Oh dear.

But God is all about forgiveness.

He told Israel to set up six ‘cities of refuge’ – essentially safe bases (kinda like the “Langit” in Langit’ Lupa) that you could run to, explain your story to the town elders, and hide out in, knowing that they were duty-bound to protect you. Anyone hunting you was NOT allowed to enter the city at all. Safe.

And the kicker, the thing that really showed the extent of God’s grace, was this: you weren’t even trapped there for life.

When the current High Priest died, you were ‘forgiven’ – released even from your sanctuary, and allowed to go home without anyone being allowed to harm you.

Spotted Jesus yet? Praise God for His grace then – what a picture of our freedom now!

Our ‘High Priest’ really represents us to God (Hebrews 4:14): Jesus didn’t just carry us into a Temple’s Holy of Holiest but into the Throne Room of heaven itself.

He died once, to pay for ALL sins, for ALL time.

If you run to God’s refuge in Jesus, then wherever you are, the accuser (what “Satan” actually means) can’t touch you, and you’re in a completely restored relationship with Him.

What now?

Read Hebrews 4:135:10 today. Make time to write it out and stick it up.

‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge…’ Joshua 20:2 NIV
