Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing

Simon had dreamt of packing it in. Catching fish wasn’t easy work, at all. Days could be too hot for fish; days could be too cold. Some days it rained down and you didn’t feel much like getting into a boat. Some days the waters just froze. And now, here was Jesus promising a lifetime of ‘fishing’ for men.

Well, Simon hoped it would be easier. Yet he’d soon realize there would be easy and tough days with people, too. There would be long sermons and great healing meetings, and still nobody would bite. There would be days when trouble just rained down. Sometimes he just wouldn’t feellike fishing for men.

But if the fishing business had taught him anything, it was to get out to sea. To be a do-er. He knew he was a cranky old moaner if he was cooped up too long. He needed the wind in his hair, the sea-breeze in his lungs and the backbreaking work of hauling up nets to keep active. Following Jesus would be pretty similar.  Spending most of his life in church, not reaching anyone, wasn’t for him.

When it comes to walking out our faith, it’s sometimes best just get out there in your school/college/workplace/home, fishing. Church is meant to help us in this, but not hide us from it.

Sometimes, if we aren’t serving others, we start serving ourselves.

If we aren’t helping the hurting, we can end up hurting the helping.

What Now?

Which part of your community can you and some Christian friends get practically involved in? Plan a group meeting, then get together to discuss what you can do.
