Word 4U Today

Take a look at today’s verse (we couldn’t fit it all – definitely a good excuse for you to crack open your Bible, though… hint, hint…) It’s a bit of a pressure-point in society today, but comparing themselves to others can be difficult. Thankfully, it’s possible to find confidence in God. But, can it go both ways? Is it sometimes a little too easy to be comfortable in our own skin?

Here it is: what about when we KNOW we’re good?

Like, being humble is all well and good, but as soon as you know you’ve got an intelligence/skill/ability better than your friends/peers/colleagues, doesn’t it get a bit too easy to be happy with yourself, at the expense of relying on God for your self-worth?

Well, those who are ‘commending themselves’ (first part of the verse), was written in reference to those high up in society, and the (uber-celebrity) athletes of the time. They knew they were good at what they did, and pretty much nobody could touch them. Yet here, we’re warned of assuming we’re the standard to measure by.

So, how is it possible to really be good at something, but not compare yourself negatively with others who aren’t so good? Verse 17:

‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’

Do you have that winning ability? Don’t let your self-esteem hinge on it: acknowledge that it’s God-given. Whatever it is, it’s meant to build others up; it’s not for putting them down.

What now?

Write down a list of your strengths. It’s good to be positive. Now, ask God to maximise those strengths. Let Him lead, not you.

‘…When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.’ 2 Corinthians 10:12
