‘Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God’ Romans 10:17 NKJ

What’s the worst life-scenario you can imagine?

Give this a try: you’re born into poverty in the mid-1800s in an area where poverty is almost-normal. Not a great start. On top of that, you can’t read. And, just to survive, you’ve been picking root crops at an early age. Can you still imagine yourself being used by God?

Bradford’s own Smith Wigglesworth is said to have seen twenty three people raised from the dead.

A woman is said to have held her own cancer in her hand (right!?) after a faith-healing encounter with the Yorkshireman.

Sight was given to the sightless, the voiceless found speech and the deaf could hear again.

Yet his life is the life we imagined early on in the passage. Who would have known that despite where he came from, he’d turn out to be a hugely influential part of God’s Kingdom? (HUGE HINT: anyone can be used by God!)

Alright then, spill the beans, what was his secret?

This legend of a guy (look him up!) had faith that came from reading one hardback only: The Bible.

Smith learned to break through the illiteracy of his youth by reading it. Plus, he coined the motto- ‘Fear looks; faith jumps’. He took God directly by His Word by living out the promises about joy, healing, and fulfillment. Imagine if you didn’t just read what God had to say, but truly believed it.

What now?

There are plenty of Bible reading plans out there so what are you waiting for? Get stuck and dare to take God at His Word. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Colossians 3:16 ESV)
