CHURCH (GROWTH) HISTORY 1: Beginnings

CHURCH (GROWTH) HISTORY 1: Beginnings

Headlines have been declaring the death of the Church  for a while now. (Time magazine even ran a headline “Is God Dead?” back in the 60s). So what’s the truth about the supposed decline of the Church? Well, yup, attendance may be in decline in some churches, and in some parts of the world. But there’s stuff stirring in our nation too… and around the world, reports are that more people are becoming Christians today than at any other point in human history.

What started as an apprenticeship group gathering around Jesus has spread to the four corners of the globe, taking root in almost every culture in almost every language.

Churches meet in homes, stadiums, in malls, in secret, in public spaces; some are loud, some are more silent… Globally, around two billion people make up the worldwide Church family.

How did they get there?

Well, some were born into it. But most were brought.

Jesus told a certain parable of a great banquet. The master of the house wanted his table full, “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full’” (Luke 14:23 NIV).

God loves for people to ‘come into His family.

His heart is for those who are already in the family to share what they know with others.

What Now?

Go check Luke 14:15-24. Today’s challenge: what ways can the Church, can you, do  to better urge people to ‘come in’ and discover God’s great banquet for themselves?
