Sticking it Out

‘Blessed is the man who perseveres…’           James 1:12 NIV

Perseverance. A real toughy. Where do you start?

Well, we’ve all been through times where going through the thick of it is a hard choice, but the right one (and if you’re doing that now, good job!) Generally, the world we live in doesn’t like ‘sticking it out’.

Relationships.

Education.

Jobs.

Friendships

these can all last for as long as we can be bothered,

and we reckon the attention-span of society is getting shorter.

And.

Short.

Er.

We’ve all felt our commitment wavering, probably even in relationship with God (remember that time He didn’t seem to answer your prayers?)

But if you base decisions on what makes you feel good, to become an inspirational leader, or to be ‘super-holy’, then commitment isn’t ever going to seem very attractive when things aren’t going your way.

The purpose of your relationship with God simply needs to be putting Him first, regardless.

(Jesus probably didn’t fancy the cross much. If you’ve read about the effects of crucifixion, you know it’s a nasty, nasty way to die. See Aug 23.)

You see, maybe, just maybe, God knows more than we do.

If you’re following Him in order to make a difference to this world (and not just in yourself), then what He does might not always make sense to us.

But having the perspective that He’s got it under control AND it’ll always work out for your good is surely worth carrying on through difficult times.

What now?

Community is vital to Christian life (See John 17: 20-26). Name two or three people who have stuck by your side and helped you. And then go out of your way to thank them!
